Farmers celebrate top prizes at show

CATTLE, sheep, pigs and poultry from exhibitors in the Cotswolds and the Vale of Evesham picked up prestigious awards at the Royal Show this week.

Record numbers for livestock and equestrian events confirmed that the Royal Show had returned to its farming grass roots.

The show was a celebration of the agricultural industry and Dominique Loral, managing director of organisers Haymarket Land Events, said the show was no longer targeting Joe Public but concentrating on farmers and their families.

She explained: "We are not stopping the public from coming, in fact they are very welcome, but all our marketing spend and everything we have done in the run-up to the show has been very much targeted at the farming sector."

Bomford Turner Limited, of Salford Priors, Evesham, was awarded a Silver Medal in the prestigious Royal Agricultural Society of England Machinery Awards for its Buzzard hedge and verge cutter.

In the sheep rings, the Vernon Millers of Blackwell Grange, Shipston, were well represented among the winners with their Vendeens. C J Vernon-Miller had the best ram lamb, reserve performance recorded ram lamb and best and reserve group of three. W R Vernon Miller took the ewe lamb class which went on to be the best British Vendeen sheep.

In the Charollais classes, the father and daughter partnership of Derrick Daffurn and Jennifer Curtis, of Elm Farm, Wickhamford, had the best ewe lamb.

Ms K Jones, of Radford Road, Rous Lench, completed a double with her Zwartble sheep taking best male and best female, the female taking the best exhibit title in any other variety Lowland Breeds and the male standing reserve.

Carol Webb, of Station Road, Chipping Campden, took a team of Berkshire pigs to the show, finishing with a number of place cards while her Caumpedene Royal Sapphire 81 was reserve best Berkshire sow.

Highland Cattle from the Craycombe Herd of Mrs H A L Dawes, of Fladbury, were again among leading winners. Daniella of Craycombe was best 2004 heifer, Prince of Craycombe best 2004 bull, with Prince best junior highlander under two years and Daniella standing reserve to him.

Grove Willowherb 23 from Douglas Scott's Grove Herd of South Devons at Moreton, was the best cow with calf at foot and Grove Willowherb 21 best cow that had qualified.

Fiona Stobinski, of Harvington Lane, Norton, collected a clutch of awards with her bantams in the poultry marquee.

She had best Australorp, male of female, best male and best female Orpington, and her Orpington hen was the best bantam.

In the horse section, Time and Again V, owned by Mrs M. Hambro, of Cotswold Stud Farms, Sezincote, Moreton, ridden by Nicky Roncoroni, was the best lightweight mare or gelding, reserve champion working hunter and best UK bred lightweight working hunter.
